Ethereum’s recent Dencun hard fork marks a significant stride towards a layer-2 focused future, prompting Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to advocate for a shift in mindset towards building layer-2 (L2) decentralized applications (DApps) and solutions.
Speaking at the ETH Global’s Pragma London event on March 14, Buterin celebrated the successful completion of the network upgrade, emphasizing its potential to enhance scalability by reducing costs associated with submitting cryptographic proofs to Ethereum’s base layer.
Buterin’s presence at the event drew over 500 attendees, reflecting the community’s eagerness to hear insights from one of Ethereum’s key figures.
Reflecting on Ethereum’s roadmap post-transition to proof-of-stake consensus after The Merge in 2022, Buterin highlighted the engineering milestones achieved, including those realized with the Dencun hard fork.
The upgrade, featuring Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-4844), revolutionized how Ethereum rollups store data on the mainnet, introducing more cost-effective methods for adding data to blocks.
Buterin stressed the need for Ethereum’s ecosystem to evolve its approach to make a broader impact on the internet and conventional financial systems. He underscored the importance of transitioning from an inwardly focused period to one with a global impact.
While acknowledging that Ethereum will continue to evolve, Buterin emphasized the importance of adopting an L2-centric mindset, particularly for application developers. He highlighted the increased ease of building scalable and privacy-preserving DApps using tools like zero-knowledge proofs.
Buterin urged builders to embrace an “Ethereum 2.0” approach, leveraging contemporary tools and protocols like L2 rollups to unlock improved privacy, security, and performance benefits.
