Study Shows Retail CBDCs Are Failing to Meet Consumer Demands

Despite their growing global interest, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are facing significant obstacles to adoption, even in countries where they’ve already launched. A new survey by GlobalData highlights that for many consumers, CBDCs still fail to offer enough advantages over traditional payment methods, struggling with user incentives, privacy concerns, and technological barriers.

According to GlobalData’s report, the lack of compelling reasons for consumers to switch to CBDCs is a major factor in the limited uptake of digital currencies in countries like the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, and Nigeria. Blandina Szalay, a banking and payments analyst at GlobalData, notes that these regions’ CBDC projects have seen only modest adoption due to a lack of incentives to leave behind familiar payment options.

Lack of Incentives and Convenience Factors

Convenience and habit are powerful factors in consumer behavior, and, as Szalay explains, CBDCs haven’t yet provided enough of an advantage to make people change their payment habits. In fact, many users in countries with active CBDC initiatives have expressed frustration, saying that the new digital payment systems often complicate transactions without offering clear benefits.

The challenge for central banks goes beyond technical implementation, however. Reaching widespread adoption is vital if CBDCs are to deliver the benefits they promise, such as greater cross-border payment efficiency, financial inclusion, and overall monetary stability.

The Global Shift Toward CBDCs

As of September 2024, the Atlantic Council reported that 134 countries—representing 98% of the global economy—are exploring the potential of CBDCs. Over 65 nations, including India, Australia, and Brazil, are already in advanced stages of development, piloting, or launching their own digital currencies. Among the G20 countries, all are actively investigating CBDCs, with 19 nations currently in advanced stages of exploration.

Despite the enthusiasm from governments and central banks, GlobalData’s survey underscores that achieving mainstream adoption of CBDCs will require overcoming significant hurdles, including addressing privacy concerns, ensuring technological interoperability, and creating incentives that resonate with consumers.
