Proposal for Nigeria to Adopt European-Inspired Crypto Rules

Obinna Uzoije, a data and policy analyst from Nigeria, has commended the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) stablecoin rules as a positive step. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Uzoije emphasized the importance of jurisdictions prioritizing their interests in crypto projects to safeguard local currencies.

Uzoije shared insights on how the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) could benefit from adopting regulations similar to Europe’s MiCA. He highlighted the potential advantages such a regulatory framework could offer ECOWAS member states in managing cryptocurrency activities.

The stablecoin regulations under MiCA

Uzoije noted that stablecoins represent the predominant use case for crypto assets. He highlighted that Africa, in particular, sees more transactions involving stablecoins than any other type of digital asset.

MiCA’s stablecoin regulations, which came into effect on June 30, mark a significant milestone in crypto asset regulation across Europe.

The regulation mandates that issuers and other entities must obtain a MiCA license without a transitional period to publicly offer or trade asset-referenced tokens or e-money tokens within the EU.

Attracting Cryptocurrency Investors to ECOWAS

Meanwhile, certain ECOWAS countries, like Sierra Leone, currently enforce strict regulations or outright bans on cryptocurrencies. Implementing a comprehensive regulatory framework across all 15 member nations of ECOWAS could potentially alleviate these restrictions.

A unified regulatory framework for all ECOWAS member states would provide much-needed clarity for potential crypto investors. Uzoije proposed that ECOWAS-specific rules could simplify investments across member states, eliminating the need to navigate multiple national regulations.

“This could attract more investors by addressing regulatory uncertainty, a significant global concern in crypto investment,” Uzoije emphasized.

Regarding Nigeria’s concerns about money laundering, particularly in the ongoing Binance dispute, Uzoije suggested that ECOWAS could strengthen its anti-money laundering efforts through a unified regulatory framework.

He argued that such a framework would enhance the ability to track money laundering activities involving crypto entities within ECOWAS. Additionally, clear regulations could empower authorities to tackle the financing of terrorist activities more effectively.
