Binance.US, the American arm of the global cryptocurrency giant Binance, has named Lesley O’Neill as its new Chief Compliance Officer, as per an official announcement. O’Neill, with extensive experience including a five-year stint at digital identity fintech Prove Identity, where she served as Chief Compliance Officer for two years, will now oversee Binance.US’s know-your-customer (KYC), anti-money laundering (AML), and sanctions programs.
Lesley O’Neill steps into the role previously held by Tammy Weinrib, who departed the company in November after nearly two years. Interim CEO Norman Reed expressed confidence in O’Neill, citing her expertise in fraud and identity, as well as her successful track record in developing and managing compliance and legal functions.
Amid regulatory challenges faced by Binance. US and its parent company Binance, which settled with various U.S. regulatory bodies for $4.3 billion, O’Neill’s appointment comes at a critical juncture. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao also stepped down as CEO in November, settling an anti-money laundering violation with a $50 million fine.
Binance. US has witnessed executive departures, including former CEO Brian Shroder in September. Interim CEO Norman Reed, a former SEC regulator, has been leading the company since then. Despite the regulatory hurdles, analysts believe Binance will maintain its dominance, particularly in non-U.S. markets, where its reputation with retail customers remains robust.
While Binance experienced minor outflows following the settlement news, the report suggests no significant panic among customers. However, increased competition from rivals like Coinbase and emerging exchanges in regulated markets is anticipated.
