In a recent discussion within an X (formerly Twitter) space titled “Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) Approved” on January 11, Tesla CEO Elon Musk explored the possibility of utilizing cryptocurrencies on Mars. Responding to a question about what form of currency he would use on the red planet, Musk shed light on his plans for inter-planetary human existence and potential challenges that might arise.
During the conversation, a participant raised the question of currency on Mars, considering the absence of any established fiscal model. Musk suggested that digital assets could be used to some extent on Mars. However, he noted that Bitcoin might face challenges initially due to the extended reconciliation time required for transactions over significant distances.
Musk later adjusted his initial stance, acknowledging that while the distance between Earth and Mars poses a challenge, it might still be possible to use Bitcoin to some degree. He highlighted the need for localized solutions on Mars due to the potential 20-minute communication delay.
Addressing the efficiency of localized lightning capacity on Mars, Musk confirmed that stakeholders in the crypto industry are contemplating ways to bring cryptocurrencies to the red planet. However, challenges associated with distance and communication delays need to be addressed.
Many in the crypto community see virtual assets as a viable form of payment on Mars, considering the absence of centralized financial institutions and the potential benefits for technology. Adam Back, the CEO of Blockstream, commented on the issue of speed and distance, stating that Bitcoin’s current 10-minute block format can handle the communication delay of 12-22 light minutes. He also suggested a futuristic approach, envisioning a Dyson sphere around the sun for mining operations.
Elon Musk, renowned for his roles at Tesla and SpaceX, is actively involved in space exploration, including the ambitious goal of colonizing Mars. SpaceX, along with other partners, continues to research the development of Mars, emphasizing its importance for the long-term survival of the human race. Musk envisions integrating advanced technology to expedite transportation and significantly reduce associated costs in the process.
