The crypto community is abuzz with speculation after Donald Trump’s social media accounts promoted a new Solana-based memecoin, with many questioning whether the posts are genuine or the result of a hack.
Trump’s Memecoin Announcement Sparks Debate
On January 18, Donald Trump’s official X (formerly Twitter) account shared a surprising announcement:
“My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE! It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING! Join my very special Trump Community. GET YOUR TRUMP NOW.”
The post, which was mirrored on Trump’s Truth Social account, introduced the “Official Trump (TRUMP)” memecoin. Within hours, the token reached a trading price of $8.41 and achieved a staggering market cap of $8.3 billion, according to memecoin trading platform Moonshot.
While the numbers seem impressive, the crypto industry remains split over whether the posts were genuinely made by Trump or the result of a security breach ahead of his scheduled presidential inauguration on January 20.
Crypto Industry Divided on Authenticity
Many prominent voices in the crypto world have weighed in on the legitimacy of the posts. Max Schwartman, founder and CEO of BecauseBitcoin, noted the stakes of the situation in a January 18 X post:
“If it’s a hack, then this is going to severely mute Trump’s bullishness on crypto right as he takes office (bearish). If it’s real, things are about to get absolutely out of control this quarter.”
Meanwhile, crypto influencer JRNY Crypto questioned why Trump’s advisors have not released a formal statement confirming the legitimacy of the token beyond the social media posts.
Others have expressed concerns about potential market consequences. Crypto trader Edward Morra warned on X:
“This will end bad in one way or another and lead into general market sell-off going into inauguration.”
Some Believe It’s Legit but Won’t Participate
While some in the industry suspect the memecoin might be legitimate, they remain wary of engaging with it. Crypto commentator “Daniel Got Hits” told his 61,900 followers on X that he had a “gut feeling” the posts were authentic, but he had no intention of investing.
“I’m not touching this thing with a ten-foot pole,” he stated.
Similarly, crypto analyst Will Clemente observed a frenzy in the market, noting that Solana’s price surged 4.12% to $228 following the launch of the TRUMP memecoin.
“I’ve never seen anything like this—Solana’s price is ripping, and everything on-chain is nuking as people panic sell to FOMO into Trump’s memecoin,” Clemente wrote.
Timing Raises Further Questions
The controversy surrounding the TRUMP memecoin comes just days before Trump’s presidential inauguration on January 20. Reports suggest that one of Trump’s first executive actions in office may include signing an order to designate cryptocurrency as a national priority.
As the mystery around the memecoin’s authenticity deepens, the crypto world waits for clarity—either from Trump’s team or from further developments in the market. Whether it’s a calculated move or an elaborate hack, the TRUMP memecoin has already made waves in the industry.
