The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) is reportedly considering the launch of Bitcoin trading services to meet the increasing demand for digital assets.
Sources familiar with the matter have informed the Financial Times that CME Group, the world’s largest futures exchange, is contemplating offering Bitcoin trading. Despite ongoing discussions with interested traders, CME has not yet made any public announcements regarding this initiative.
This potential move follows the recent approval by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to list spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on CME, alongside its existing crypto futures products. Although the initial influx of institutional capital into spot Bitcoin ETFs was significant, market sentiment has since cooled, resulting in minimal inflows for ETF issuers.
Should CME proceed with launching its spot trading business, operations are expected to be conducted through the EBS currency trading venue in Switzerland. This choice is influenced by the region’s robust regulations governing crypto trading and storage.
In early 2024, the SEC approved multiple spot Bitcoin ETFs for listing on all registered national exchanges in the U.S., including Nasdaq, NYSE, and CBOE, following a prolonged pursuit of these products. However, the SEC has been hesitant to swiftly approve options for spot Bitcoin ETFs, sparking debates about whether such options should be subjected to the same regulations as stocks.
