BlackRock’s IBIT Purchases 6,470 BTC, Boosting Bitcoin Holdings

BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), has expanded its Bitcoin holdings by 6,470 BTC, following a slight dip in Bitcoin’s price after its recent all-time high of $109,000.

On January 21, BitcoinTreasuries data revealed that IBIT had added 6,470 BTC, valued at approximately $682.43 million, bringing its total Bitcoin holdings to 563,134 BTC. At current market prices, the value of BlackRock’s Bitcoin stash stands at $59.4 billion.

Spot Bitcoin ETF Inflows Led by BlackRock

In addition to its latest Bitcoin purchase, BlackRock’s IBIT has been a major beneficiary of inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs. Over the past three days, IBIT has led the pack in Bitcoin ETF inflows, a trend that continued on January 21, with $661.9 million flowing into the fund on the same day it made the BTC purchase.

The latest moves reflect BlackRock’s increasing confidence in Bitcoin as an investment. This optimism comes after Bitcoin reached a new all-time high of $109,020 earlier in January, triggering a surge in the value of IBIT’s Bitcoin holdings. On January 16–17, IBIT’s Bitcoin assets briefly soared in value to $1.3 trillion.

Bitcoin’s Price Pullback

After hitting its new high, Bitcoin has experienced a mild pullback. As of January 22, the price of Bitcoin stands at $105,477, reflecting a 3.7% increase in the last 24 hours and more than 8% growth over the past week.

While Bitcoin’s rally appears to be slowing, market analysts are keeping a close eye on the potential impact of recent political developments, including President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Trump’s administration has made crypto a focal point, with plans to establish a national Bitcoin reserve aimed at positioning the U.S. as the “crypto capital” of the world.

MicroStrategy Maintains Bitcoin Leadership

Despite BlackRock’s recent expansion into the Bitcoin market, Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy remains the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin. The company recently acquired 11,000 BTC, valued at $1.1 billion at the time of purchase, bringing its total Bitcoin holdings to 461,000 BTC. MicroStrategy is followed by MARA Holdings and Riot Platforms in the rankings of corporate Bitcoin holders.

BlackRock’s Previous Bitcoin Purchase

In December 2024, BlackRock made a notable Bitcoin acquisition, purchasing $1 billion worth of Bitcoin just before the price took a sharp decline. This move highlights BlackRock’s strategy of acquiring Bitcoin at key moments, further solidifying its commitment to the cryptocurrency as a long-term investment asset.

As Bitcoin’s price fluctuates, BlackRock’s continued investment in the asset underscores its growing belief in the cryptocurrency’s future, even amid short-term volatility. Whether Bitcoin’s rally will continue remains uncertain, but for now, BlackRock and other major institutional players continue to position themselves to benefit from its long-term potential.
