Crypto Miners Transform Data Centers to Meet Surging AI Demand

The increasing demand for GPUs is driving crypto miners to repurpose their data centers to cater to the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, the unprecedented demand for data center and GPU resources in the AI sector is prompting crypto mining companies to explore new opportunities by converting their existing infrastructure.

AI Industry Fuels Computing Power Demand

The AI boom has created an unprecedented shortage of essential equipment and the electricity needed to power these resources. The report highlighted that new data center facilities under construction are rapidly being leased, with approximately 83% of the capacity already claimed by AI companies and cloud service providers, as noted in a March report by commercial real estate firm CBRE Group.

To address the increasing demand for data center space, many companies are turning to crypto mining firms, which already possess the necessary infrastructure and are seeking more profitable uses for their properties.

“Receiving cold calls and text messages from industry peers searching for capacity because it simply isn’t available,” described Matt Brown, Chief Operating Officer of Core Scientific, during a Nvidia-hosted conference.

“Everyone is scrambling to figure out where they can find capacity in the next 12 months, and it’s becoming exponentially more difficult,” Brown added.

Core Scientific’s Collaboration with CoreWeave

This trend of collaboration was exemplified when Core Scientific announced a partnership with AI startup CoreWeave, expected to generate approximately $3.5 billion in revenue over 12 years.

“We see the opportunity in AI today as one where we can convert existing infrastructure to host clients who want to install large arrays of GPUs for their AI needs,” stated Adam Sullivan, CEO of Core Scientific.

The company has identified about 500 megawatts of capacity available for conversion to AI facilities, potentially making it the largest GPU installation dedicated to AI globally. This capacity is enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes for a year.

As the AI industry continues to grow, the transformation of crypto mining data centers into AI-ready facilities is set to play a crucial role in meeting the rising demand for computational power.
